The game comes with a beautiful cast of anime characters and revolves around the journey of a female protagonist, named Princess Meltys who takes the responsibility to restore her kingdom to its former condition. It is one of these monsters who kidnap your fellow sibling, after mistaking them and their costume for an extraordinarily large piece of candy, prompting you on your quest to recover your sibling from the monsters’ clutches (so that your parents don’t ground you). I enjoyed that first Costume Quest game. With such an unfortunate track record as this, the studio has instead opted to forgo the risks of a big budge retail game for their most recent project, Costume Quest, and have instead developed a seasonally-themed downloadable title for Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network. Tim Schafer’s Double Fine studio hasn’t met with too much commercial success since their start-up in early 2000, despite their development of clever, quirky, and critically acclaimed games such as Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. Unexpectedly and suddenly, Psychonauts-makers Double Fine have ended their silly sabbatical from PC games, and announced that they’ll be releasing their Halloween-themed RPG Costume Quest on Steam. You can still take less damage to it with a proper button timing when blocking, but otherwise it doesn’t do much other than make silly quips at the start of its turn, which, alas, I can confirm do repeat. You select attack and then must time the button press with the indicator on-screen to hit maximum damage. Basically, the Candy Corn costume does not attack enemies. I’ll talk about the Candy Corn costume in just a bit. For sure, I’ll play Costume Quest 3, if Double Fine decides to make more, but I’d love to see this evolve more mechanically. Here’s the four-one-one. Costume Quest 2 from Double Fine and Midnight City takes place once again on Halloween night. The game has come a long, long way and if you haven’t played it before, this is an excellent time to plop down the $40 for the game and $10 for a month of online and see what you’ve been missing. Then, we greased up and wrestled with El Blaze from Virtua Fighter 5 — he was tough by the way. One way or another, however, you’re going to be using the attack button almost nonstop – and you can forget about strategy. The candy you earn is primarily used for purchasing ‘battle stamps’, special stat boosting equipment that has such effects as increased HP or providing you with an attack that stuns the enemy. Battles are turn-based affairs involving timed button presses in order to successfully defend yourself or boost the amount of damage you inflict upon your enemy. All of the costumes have different strengths and weaknesses against specific enemy types, but I really never found myself worrying about that. However you’re keeping up, remember: have fun, don’t panic, and enjoy BlizzCon!

Each of the costumes the kids wear have different basic and special attacks, and I ended up relying on the Superhero, Clown, Wizard, and Jefferson costumes the most. For instance, the pterodactyl can use its wings to blow away big piles of leaves or garbage, and the wizard can illuminate dark areas the kids are too scared to explore without a light. Later, when Corvus teaches the kids how to perform counters, Candy Corn can at least occasionally deal some damage back, since everyone like to target it the most. ‘A great deal of fun went into it,’ he said, ‘so why grumble? That said, I’m getting a copy of Costume Quest 2 this month on PlayStation 3 from PlayStation Plus and, for once, I will not even bother downloading it. I’m talking about the “Hardcorn” Achievement, which requires you to keep a kid in the Candy Corn costume for the entire game. The linear nature of the game makes it seem almost instantly familiar, like a game you’ve played before, and allows its quirks to take priority.
